What you need to repair a bicycle chain on the road
In order to repair a broken chain you will need:
- A chain cutter.
- A quick link compatible with your chain.
- A few minutes and a quiet place to work.

Step 1 – Remove the damaged link from the chain
When the chain breaks, the affected link is deformed or open and cannot be reused.
Use the chain cutter to remove the broken link completely, leaving the chain split into two clean ends.
🎯 The goal is to have both ends with empty inner holes, ready to attach a quick link.
Step 2 – Leave both ends of the chain prepared.
Before joining the chain, check that both ends are compatible.
Each end should terminate in:
- Inner plates
- Visible and free orifices
If they do not match, remove an additional link until both sides fit correctly.
Step 3 – Present the ends of the chain
With the chain already prepared, bring both ends together with your hands.
At this point you will see clearly:
- The two inner circumferences of each end
- The exact space where the quick link will enter
This step is key to avoid mistakes before splicing.
Step 4 – Connect the chain with a quick link
Insert each half of the quick link into one end of the chain and gently pull them together.
Do not force yet: make sure they are well presented and aligned.
This system is the most reliable and fastest way to repair a chain on the road.
Step 5 – Correctly adjust the fastener
This is the most delicate moment of the repair.
Hold the chain with your hands and verify that:
- The quick link is centered
- Both sides are flush
- No bent plates
Stretch with your hands and make the quick links fit together.
If something does not fit, adjust before continuing.
Step 6 – Lock the quick link with the foot pedal
Position the chain correctly on the bicycle.
Put your foot on the pedal and give a firm forward stroke, in the forward direction of the bicycle.
This gesture locks the quick link and leaves the chain ready to ride safely.
