The Portuguese Way in 5 stages.
The Portuguese Way of St. James along the coast is one of the most beautiful and varied routes to Santiago de Compostela. Starting from the vibrant city of Porto, in Portugal, this cycling route can be completed comfortably in 5 stages with hotel accommodation. From Bicigrino, specialists in the Camino de Santiago by bike and cycling tourism, we have prepared a detailed planning of stages, suggested accommodations and additional services (such as luggage transport and bike rental) to help you organize your trip.
Planning well this itinerary is essential, as the Portuguese Way along the coast does not have as many accommodation options as other more popular routes. Take this guide as a flexible guide, adapting it to your needs; each bicigrino can adjust the distances according to his or her own pace. It is recommended to book hotels and key services in advance, especially in high season, to ensure availability at each destination and avoid setbacks.
Pick-up of the rental bike in Oporto
When starting the Camino in Porto, an important logistical issue arises: where to store or pick up the bicycle? The narrow streets and historic buildings in the center of Porto mean that many hotels do not have adequate space to store bicycles. For this reason, if you rent a bike with Bicigrino, we deliver the bike to an affiliated bike rental and storage facility in Porto. Our partner in the city is a very well located store that is open every day and offers an excellent service to bicigrinos.
Thus, you can pick up your rental bike directly at that establishment upon your arrival in Porto (with a small additional service charge of 20 € for special delivery in store). If instead of renting you decide to use your own bike, Bicigrino can also help you: we have a bike delivery service that allows you to send your personal bike to Porto, to pick it up comfortably at the same place and have it ready to start the route.

Porto: a charming starting point
Getting to Porto is quite easy, as it is the second largest city in Portugal and is very well connected by both train and plane. It is worth planning at least a day to enjoy this historic city before you start cycling. Lose yourself calmly in its cobbled streets, explore its charming corners and savor the nightlife of the Ribeira, on the banks of the Douro River. Tasting a good Port wine overlooking the river at sunset is an excellent way to celebrate the beginning of the adventure.
Lodging in Oporto
You can stay in the historic center to soak up the atmosphere (for example, in a boutique hotel near the cathedral or on the banks of the Duero River). Remember to confirm with the hotel if they offer bike storage facilities. In case your hotel does not have bike storage facilities, don’t worry: you can leave your bike at the affiliated store until the time you start your tour.

Stage 1: Porto – Esposende (64 km)
The first stage runs along the north coast of Portugal from Porto to Esposende, totaling approximately 64 kilometers. To find the correct route of the
Tip: Be careful not to confuse the signs with those of the Central Portuguese Way. In the area of Porto Cathedral you will see yellow arrows pointing to both paths (the central route and the coastal route). Always follow the signs indicating “Camino da Costa”. If by some mistake you take the wrong route inland, do not be alarmed: about 30 km further on there is a signposted detour that allows you to link up again with the Coastal Way and take the correct itinerary to Esposende.
Destination – Esposende: This small coastal town will be the end of your first day. The route here is mainly flat, passing by beaches and pleasant trails by the sea. In Esposende we have selected an ideal accommodation for cyclists: the Hotel Suave Mar, located next to the promenade. This hotel offers all the amenities you need after cycling, including a safe place to store your bike and excellent treatment to guests. Relax in the sea breeze and recharge your batteries for the next stage.

Stage 2: Esposende – Caminha (50 km)
In the second stage you will continue heading north for about 50 km, always parallel to the Atlantic coast, until you reach Caminha, on the border with Spain. This Portuguese town is located on the banks of the river Minho (Minho in Portuguese), which marks the natural border between the two countries. To continue the Camino towards Galicia, you will have to cross the Miño estuary by ferry to the town of A Guarda, already in the province of Pontevedra.
Our advice is to stop in Caminha at the end of this stage, both for its beauty and for the convenience of its location. It is a town with a lot of historical charm and a lively summer atmosphere. In addition, here you can calmly plan the

Stage 3: Caminha – Vigo (61 km)
Once you cross A Guarda in Galicia, you will start the third stage that covers about 61 km to the city of Vigo. Already in Spanish territory, the first kilometers run along the sea, passing through beautiful coastal stretches and the picturesque town of Baiona. From Baiona, the Portuguese Coastal Route gradually moves away from the coast and heads northeast towards Vigo.
It should be noted that in this area the route can become somewhat twisty and confusing in certain sections, due to the number of trails and local detours. Pay attention to the signage so as not to lose your way, especially before entering Vigo. It is also worth noting that before reaching Vigo you will encounter some
Another factor to consider when approaching Vigo is the traffic: it is a large city and the entrance can generate some stress due to the circulation of cars and the complexity of intersections and urban turns. To make your arrival easier, in Bicigrino we have selected a strategic hotel on the outskirts of Vigo, very close to the Camino itself: the Hotel Hesperia Vigo, located next to the Balaídos stadium (an easy to recognize landmark). This accommodation will allow you to access from the route without having to cross the entire city center, and has adequate facilities for storing bicycles. After a long day, you will rest comfortably here before continuing inland to Galicia.

Stage 4: Vigo – Caldas de Reis (62 km)
You are already in Galicia! The fourth stage, of about 62 km, takes you from Vigo to Caldas de Reis, and is a very different experience from the previous coastal days. Here begins the typical Galician “leg-breaker” profile : a constant up and down through beautiful rural landscapes. You will cycle through green meadows, lush forests and small villages, but be prepared for continuous hills that can require considerable effort. This stage is longer and more physically demanding; however, if the weather is good, you will fully enjoy the ride and the quiet beauty of the Galician hinterland.
On the way, about halfway through the route, you will pass through the city of Pontevedra. Pontevedra is well worth a break: its pedestrianized old town is ideal to take a break, have something to eat and recharge your batteries before facing the final kilometers to Caldas de Reis.
Destination – Caldas de Reis: This small town is famous for its hot springs and spas, a perfect reward after a hard day of pedaling. In fact, our recommended accommodation here is the historic Balneario Acuña, which in addition to accommodation offers thermal pools where you can relax your legs in mineral-medicinal waters. Caldas de Reis also boasts an excellent gastronomic offer; be sure to try the Galician cuisine in its typical restaurants, you’ve earned it!

Stage 5: Caldas de Reis – Santiago de Compostela (43 km)
Last stage! The last 43 km to Santiago de Compostela combine that mixture of emotion and nostalgia typical of the end of the Camino. The profile of continuous ups and downs between Galician villages, rivers and forests continues. Until a few kilometers before Santiago, the route runs along fairly quiet country roads. But as you get closer to the finish line, you will notice how the anxiety to arrive grows and, at the same time, a certain sadness because your great cycling adventure is about to end.
Upon entering Santiago, head towards the old town until you reach the Plaza del Obradoiro, the emblematic end point in front of the Cathedral of Santiago. Congratulations, pilgrim! You will have completed the Portuguese Way along the coast by bicycle.
Accommodation in Santiago: To finish the trip, in Bicigrino we recommend staying at Hostal La Salle, our main reference point in Santiago. This establishment, located a few minutes from the cathedral, is the official point of Bicigrino for the delivery of rental bikes and sending bikes back home . At La Salle you can comfortably return your rental bike, and if you hired the shipment of your own bike back, everything will be managed here. In addition, the hostel has excellent facilities and a wide range of accommodation options (from superior rooms with private bathrooms to more economical hostel-style beds) to suit all budgets.
(Another popular option in Santiago, especially if you’re looking for a place with historical charm, is the Hospedería San Martín Pinario, a former monastery converted into lodging next to the cathedral. Note, however, that the latter does not manage bicycle services, unlike Hostal La Salle).
Bicigrino services for your Camino: bicycles, luggage and support for cyclists
Doing the Camino de Santiago by bike is a unique experience, and in Bicigrino we want to make things easier for you so that you only have to worry about pedaling and enjoying. We have
In addition to bike rental, we offer a series of additional services for cyclists that will give you peace of mind during the route:
- Technical assistance on the road: in case of any breakdown or mechanical problem, we provide support. We have a network of collaborating workshops and assistance service (including assistance insurance option) that covers the main roads, to help you quickly if any incident arises with your bike.
- GPS tracks of the stages: we provide detailed GPS routes of each stage, available on the Wikiloc platform. Although the Camino de Santiago is well marked with the classic yellow arrows, carrying a GPS can be a great help, especially in complicated urban sections or when there are variants. Our tracks incorporate small modifications in specific areas (for example, after Baiona and before Vigo) to avoid dangerous or too mountainous passages, so that you follow a safer itinerary. You can download these routes or follow them on your device for easier orientation.
- Luggage transport: if you want to pedal without weight and enjoy each stage to the fullest, we can take care of your luggage. Bicigrino offers luggage transport service for pilgrims on bicycle. You have two options: we can send your luggage directly from the starting point to Santiago de Compostela (you will find it there at the end of the Camino), or we can transport your luggage day by day between stages, so that every morning we pick it up at your accommodation and you will find it in the afternoon at your next destination. In the case of the Portuguese Way, we collaborate with the company Tuitrans to guarantee this service between Oporto and Santiago. Traveling light will allow you to experience the route with greater comfort and safety.
“Don’t go through the road yourself, let the road go through you.“
– Tomás Sánchez, founder of Bicigrino
