Our story begins in 1991. Anita and Domingo (my parents) were running the summer terrace “El Curtidero” when they first heard about the Camino from a Belgian pilgrim. They began to satisfy their curiosity by asking him questions, and from there the first dreams of a project took shape — a way of life, a hostel to serve the pilgrim.

Later, in 1999 they registered 6 pilgrims, 16 in 2000 and 120 in 2001. Construction of the hostel dates back to 2002, although the opening came later. Friends of the Camino from different parts of Spain, together with Father Blas of Fuenterroble de Salvatierra (Salamanca), organised a lovely muleteers’ march for the event. “Casa Anita” is the first pilgrims’ hostel in the province of Zamora, and since opening we have worked constantly to make our guests’ stay as pleasant as possible, striving to renew ourselves, improving our facilities and providing all the information needed about the Camino, services, places of interest, etc.

Our philosophy: to offer top-quality service, dedication and personalised attention.

Facilities: reception; 2 rooms (for 16 and 22 people); kitchen (for the hostel’s exclusive use, with home-cooked menu service for guests and non-guests, sandwiches); dining rooms with a total capacity for 30 people, with the garden also opened in summer (20 people); 4 showers and 4 full toilets; multi-purpose room with fireplace (15/20 people); terraces and an attractive landscaped patio inside, covered with wooden arcades and tables (relaxation areas); bicycle parking; stable for horses on a nearby property.

Equipment: vending machine (coffee, water, soft drinks, pastries, chocolates, energy bars, etc.); washing machine, dryer, sinks and clothes lines; sheet and towel rental; air conditioning and heating; Wi-Fi and a shared computer; first-aid kit; books, board games, tourist leaflets; sockets in all areas; card payment.

Opening periods: booking is recommended. March to October: Monday to Sunday, 12:00 to 23:00. November to February: minimum groups of 15 people with prior booking (all requests considered).

Medical care from 10:00 to 12:00 (except Tuesdays); emergencies in the afternoons (Camarzana de Tera health centre) to reach the on-call doctor; pharmacy; Banco Santander and Caja España (09:00 to 14:00); public phone box in the Plaza Mayor; mechanic’s workshop (with bike repair service); bakery; grocery; butcher; fishmonger; bars; sports facilities (football pitch, basketball court, pelota court, fitness trail, etc.); natural swimming pool; Parish Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol; public picnic areas; children’s playgrounds with large green areas; drinking-water fountains.
