The hostel

The hostel is in Villafranca de los Barros, in the heart of the Tierra de Barros region, an area of fertile soils known for its extensive vineyards and olive groves. It is in the town centre, a few metres from the Camino waymarks, which pass by the Church of Santa María del Valle, the Town Hall and the Ethnographic Museum, among other points of interest.

The hostel is a large single-storey house typical of the area, fitted out to serve as pilgrim accommodation. It has 12 beds (8 in bunks and 4 in beds) distributed across 4 rooms for 6, 3, 2 and 1 people, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen-office, a large lounge-diner, a patio with porch and terrace, a laundry area, and a space to store and tune up the bikes. It is an ideal place to rest before the next stage, as it is a house with thick walls that keep it very cool in summer to cope with Extremadura’s intense heat. It also has air conditioning and heating.

The owner and manager of the hostel is Pablo García, a young biologist who decided to turn his passion for nature and cycling into his way of life and work. After walking the Camino twice — once on foot from Ourense and once by bike from Seville — and seeing pilgrims pass through his town, Villafranca de los Barros, every day, he made his dream come true: the “Tierra de Barros” Hostel.

The hostel is next to the centre, where you will find the Town Hall, the Plaza de España, the Church of Santa María del Valle, the Plaza Corazón de María, the Ethnographic Museum, as well as various restaurants, a pharmacy, an ATM, a bike shop and a grocery store.

For those riding the Vía de la Plata on two wheels, there is a space for the bikes to ‘rest’ safely too, and if any repair is needed, Pablo will not hesitate to help.
