NearbyPonferrada, the capital of El Bierzo, is a lively city that has not stopped growing throughout the 20th century and continues to do so today.
It is the economic and cultural engine of the whole Bierzo region and the second city of the province, and an unbeatable base from which to get to know the beautiful Bierzo area.
In the small historic centre, we recommend starting on Avenida del Castillo at Plaza del Temple, next to the Castle, since a few steps further on you will find the small 17th-century church of San Andrés. View of the Templar-origin Castle of Ponferrada.
If you return to the square and take Calle Gil y Carrasco, you will pass the Casa de los Escudos, home to the Radio Museum. At the end of the street is the tourist office, and from there you only need to climb a few metres to stand before the Basilica of Our Lady of La Encina, a Renaissance temple that guards the city’s patron saint, the Virgen de la Encina.
The best logistics of the Camino de Santiago. We have a hotel next to the cathedral of Santiago as a point of assistance and collection of our rental bicycles.
