Ponferrada, far more than a starting point<\/h2>\n

Ponferrada is the capital of El Bierzo<\/strong>, a region of gentle mountains, vineyards and chestnut groves with a light and character all its own. Its symbol is the imposing Templar Castle<\/strong>, a medieval fortress beside the River Sil that the Order of the Temple raised to protect pilgrims; walking its walls and towers is a journey back to the golden age of the Camino. The city’s name comes precisely from an iron bridge \u2014pons ferrata<\/em>\u2014 built in the 11th century to ease the pilgrims’ crossing.<\/p>\n

Two marvels wait close by. Las M\u00e9dulas<\/strong>, a World Heritage Site, is an unreal landscape of reddish peaks created by the largest Roman gold mine in the empire: a sea of torn earth among chestnut trees that takes your breath away. And the medieval town of Villafranca del Bierzo<\/strong>, with its Door of Forgiveness. At the table, El Bierzo is a land of menc\u00eda<\/strong> wine with its own Denomination of Origin, of the hearty botillo<\/strong>, of roasted peppers<\/strong> and chestnuts. The French Way from Ponferrada: route, distances and what to expect<\/h2>\n

From Ponferrada, the French Way crosses the vineyards of El Bierzo to Villafranca<\/strong>, then soon tackles the last great climb of the Camino: the O Cebreiro<\/strong> pass, the gateway to Galicia, with its stone pallozas<\/em> and magical atmosphere. From there the Camino turns intensely Galician \u2014Triacastela<\/strong>, Sarria<\/strong>, Portomar\u00edn<\/strong>, Palas de Rei<\/strong>, Arz\u00faa<\/strong>\u2014 through oak woods, stone hamlets and h\u00f3rreos<\/em>, all the way to the finish in Santiago. From Ponferrada to Santiago is about 205 kilometres.<\/p>\n

Most cyclists cover this stretch in 4 to 5 days<\/strong>, depending on their pace. It has one serious climb \u2014O Cebreiro\u2014 and then a string of gentle, very Galician ups and downs, in a beautiful, lush setting. It’s an accessible Camino for anyone with basic fitness and especially enjoyable on an e-bike. From Ponferrada you clear the 200-kilometre minimum required for the Compostela: it’s the ideal option if you want a complete but shorter Camino.<\/p>\n

How we work: your bike ready at a shop, right before you set off<\/h2>\n

Whenever possible, we don’t leave the bike waiting for you at a hotel reception<\/strong>: we deliver it to a partner bike shop<\/strong> at your starting point. Why? Because that way, after transport, a professional mechanic gives it a final check right before you leave<\/strong>: brakes, gears, tyre pressure, saddle and handlebars set to your size. You set off knowing the bike is genuinely ready, not simply parked. If a holiday or logistics make a shop delivery impossible, we arrange delivery to your accommodation.<\/p>\n

The rest of the service follows the “you just pedal” philosophy. It’s a one-way rental<\/strong>: you pick the bike up in Ponferrada and return it in Santiago, with no going back. Both work wonderfully. A gravel or MTB<\/strong> is the natural choice if you ride confidently over the Galician ups and downs. An e-bike<\/strong> \u2014batteries of 750 to 800 Wh\u2014 turns O Cebreiro and the rolling hills of Galicia into a pleasure, and lets you reach the end of each stage in one piece; you just recharge it each night. It’s the most popular choice. Anyone who rides an e-bike, covers the distance and gets their credential stamped can also request the Compostela (confirm it at the Pilgrim’s Office).<\/p>\n
