Le\u00f3n, far more than a starting point<\/h2>\n

Le\u00f3n began as a camp of the Roman Legio VII<\/em> \u2014 hence its name \u2014 and went on to be the capital of a kingdom that was key to the Reconquista. Its great treasure is the Gothic cathedral of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong>, the Pulchra Leonina<\/em>, famous for having one of the largest expanses of medieval stained glass<\/strong> in Europe: stepping inside at dusk, when the light sets the rose windows ablaze, is an experience that’s hard to forget.<\/p>\n

But Le\u00f3n has more. The Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro<\/strong> holds the Royal Pantheon<\/strong>, with Romanesque paintings so well preserved that they’re known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque”. And modernism left its mark here with Casa Botines<\/strong>, the work of a young Gaud\u00ed. As evening falls, the Barrio H\u00famedo<\/strong> comes alive: it’s a Le\u00f3n tradition that every beer or wine comes with a free tapa<\/strong>, and the city prides itself on cecina<\/strong> (cured beef), morcilla<\/strong> (blood sausage), cold cuts and good wine from the Bierzo or from Le\u00f3n’s own lands. Beginning the Camino with this much art and fine food behind you is part of the experience.<\/p>\n

The French Way from Le\u00f3n: route, distances and what to expect<\/h2>\n

From Le\u00f3n, the French Way heads west through Hospital de \u00d3rbigo<\/strong>, with its spectacular medieval bridge, to stately Astorga<\/strong>, land of the Maragatos and of chocolate, with its Episcopal Palace by Gaud\u00ed. It then takes on the most mountainous and beautiful stretch of the finale: the climb to the Cruz de Ferro<\/strong>, the highest point of the Camino, where pilgrims leave a stone, and the descent into the Bierzo<\/strong>, green and wine-growing, down to Ponferrada<\/strong>. From there, the last big climb to O Cebreiro<\/strong> and the entrance into Galicia on the way to Santiago. From Le\u00f3n to Santiago it’s about 310 kilometres.<\/p>\n

Most cyclists cover this stretch in 5 to 7 days<\/strong>, depending on their pace. It’s a beautiful, varied Camino: flat at first, with two mountain climbs \u2014 the Cruz de Ferro and O Cebreiro \u2014 that are demanding but perfectly manageable, especially on an e-bike. From Le\u00f3n you comfortably clear the 200 kilometres required for the Compostela.<\/p>\n

How we work: your bike ready at a shop, right before you set off<\/h2>\n

Whenever possible, we don’t leave the bike waiting for you at a hotel reception<\/strong>: we deliver it to a partner bike shop<\/strong> at your starting point. Why? Because that way, after transport, a professional mechanic gives it a final check right before you leave<\/strong>: brakes, gears, tyre pressure, saddle and handlebars set to your size. You set off knowing the bike is genuinely ready, not simply parked. If a holiday or logistics make a shop delivery impossible, we arrange delivery to your accommodation.<\/p>\n

The rest of the service follows the “you just pedal” philosophy. It’s a one-way rental<\/strong>: you pick the bike up in Le\u00f3n and return it in Santiago, with no need to go back. You ride the Camino with complete freedom and we handle the logistics from start to finish. We deliver bikes throughout Spain and Portugal.<\/p>\n

What your rental includes<\/h2>\n

Every bike goes out ready for the Camino, with panniers, a rear rack, a lock and a repair kit<\/strong>, serviced before delivery. We include delivery at the start and pick-up in Santiago<\/strong>, and we support you with phone and WhatsApp assistance in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese<\/strong>. The helmet is not included, for hygiene and fit: bring your own. Gravel\/mountain bike or e-bike?<\/h2>\n

Both work wonderfully. A gravel or mountain bike<\/strong> is the natural choice if you ride with confidence. An e-bike<\/strong> \u2014 750 to 800 Wh batteries \u2014 turns the Cruz de Ferro and O Cebreiro into climbs you enjoy rather than endure, and lets you reach the end of each stage in one piece; you just recharge it each night. It’s the most popular choice. Those who ride an e-bike, cover the distance and get their credential stamped can also request the Compostela (confirm it at the Pilgrim’s Office).<\/p>\n
