It is believed to be the ancient Roman town of Autharis. Right where the present chapel of San Froilan is, there is a small cave which is said to be where the Holy retired as a hermit, coming from Lugo before being appointed Bishop of Leon.
The legend tells that rabbits gnawed a part of San Froilan prayer books and consequently mice disappeared from this area because of the curse of the Saint.
During the Civil War a part of the church of San Juan Bautista was burnt.

It is worth stopping in this village as it is one of the last great towns full of history and monuments before we enter in rural Galicia.
The tradition of the Door of Forgiveness in the Romanesque church of Santiago dates back to 1122, when Pope Callistus III granted the temple the privilege of giving the Jubilee pilgrims who, for health reasons, could not reach Santiago de Compostela.
Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the door was bricked due to pests and to protect the temple from the attacks, until 1948 when reverting to the custom to mark the celebration of the Jacobean Year.
Thus, each year that July the 25th matches on Sunday, the pilgrims who have traveled at least 150 km of the pilgrimage route and that are unable to continue the journey to the tomb of the apostle can get the Jubilee in the locality.
This is the only temple in Camino de Santiago, besides the Cathedral of Santiago, with this prebend in Jacobean Holy Year.
