Surroundings
Hospital de Órbigo is known for its famous medieval bridge (Puente del paso honroso).
It is a medieval bridge from the thirteenth century built over the river Órbigo. It seems too big for what the river is but before the construction of the dam of Barrios de Luna, the river carried a large flow. It has 19 arches and is quite well preserved. Restorations were made at different times. It is a national monument since 1939.
It is set in the ancient Roman road that ran from Leon (Legio Septima Gemina) to Astorga which was in Roman times the capital of the province of Asturica Augusta.

And on June 7, 1917, Pope Benedict XI authorized the canonical coronation of the image of Virgen del Camino, starting a new overwhelming and sincere devotion that filled the shrine as before and crowded the esplanade in pilgrimages, returning thus to the memory of Christian people the name of the Mother as Our Lady of the way.

The first knowledge of the existence of St. Nicholas date from the late twelfth century, the village probably existed well before, but the only data currently available place us exactly in 1195 when a document attests that a leper hospital existed in our town.
This hospital was founded by D. Tello Pérez de Meneses, very influential at the time, who entrusted the Augustinian monks of St. Mary of Trianos wit its control.
The hospital took care of 13 lepers and pilgrims of Camino de Santiago, was a priory of Trianos monastery, but became so important as the monastery, as it owned much land in the county and several mills in the area, had charters of King Alfonso VI and its economy was sustained by donations and properties of very influential people in the society of Castilla at that time.
Currently there is no building in town to remember the existence of this hospital, although it is said that a column that is in the village cemetery could be a vestige of the building.
There was also a Templar church unfortunately disappeared, the current one dates from the XIIIth century and you can admire in it a nice Baroque altarpiece.
Documents justifying this story are found in the National Library, section Clergy, folders 1737-1739.

Welcome to Terradillos de los Templarios, a Castilian village nestled in the boundaries of the provinces of León and Palencia. Its name comes from the place name "terrado" (small rise of land).
The village is situated on a simple promontory on the N-120 that raises the first houses of the village, offering a slight rise that dominates the skyline. Hence the name of Terradillos.
Here we see the famous cellars dug in the ground, similar to Hobbiton from the famous movie Lord of the Rings ;)

The town of Ledigos, in Palencia, is located about 52 km northwest of the capital of the province. The city center lies in the valley of the stream of Templars, one of many place names in the area that recall the presence of an important settlement of the monk-knights of the Order of the Temple in this area of Castilla.
During the Middle Ages, Ledigos highlighted as a place offered to St. James by Urraca. In fact, in the year 1028 the entire village was donated to the church of Santiago de Compostela. That is why the town has a church dedicated to St. James, which was renovated in the seventeenth century and is situated on a hill from where you can see the next town, Terradillos de los Templarios, where the locals still have many legends about the mysterious order of religious warriors, as this population, which now belongs to the municipality of Ledigos was jurisdictional territory of the order of the Temple.
