Ponferrada, the capital of El Bierzo, is a city full of life that has grown steadily throughout the twentieth century and which still does it today.
It is the economic and culture engine of the whole Bierzo and the second city of the province, as well as an excellent place from which to get to know the beautiful Bierzo region.
To visit the old town, small in size, it is recommend starting at Avenida del Castillo at the height of Temple Square, next to the Castle, as a few steps further you will find the small church of San Andrés del Castillo from the XVIIth century, with views to the castle of Ponferrada, which is of Templar origin.
If you return to the square and take Gil y Carrasco street, you will pass before the House of Shields where the museum of the Radio is installed. At the end of the road there is the tourist office, and from there you just have to climb a few meters to get to the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Encina, a Renaissance temple which houses the patron saint of the town, Virgen de la Encina.

We have renovated a house to accommodate pilgrims, we only have 18 beds arranged in 3 rooms with four bunk beds and a room with 6 bunks.
The hostel is called Alea, has two floors, on the ground floor there is the laundry area, living room, reception, kitchen with a small front garden and a pleasant rear garden with a fig and a well. Upstairs we have four bedrooms and two bathrooms, one for men and one for women.

The Roman enclave of AdLegionem VII Geminam is located about 2.5 km. southeast of the city of León, near the left bank of the river Torío and 500 m from its confluence with Bernesga river. It is located in a flat area, with an average altitude of 822 m, which corresponds to the first stream terrace. It is located south of the town of Puente Castro, not knowing its original boundaries. The area of the site that's located east is crossed by Avda. San Froilan, which connects Puente Castro with the municipal cemetery.

Si el viento de ayer era malo el de hoy de frente y con lluvia al final para postre no te digo nada....
En primer lugar quiero aclararos (que en algún comentario ya me lo han dicho) que no me estoy poniendo las botas de comer, o mejor dicho si, pero tiene una explicación.... La dieta de un bicigrino (se quema mucho...) es un buen desayuno por la mañana, durante el día se come poco, se picotean frutos secos, chocolate o algún pequeño bocadillo y a la noche se hace la comida principal... eso es lo recomendado. No se puede comer fuerte al medio día pues a la tarde no podrías tirar y por otro lado hay que meter mucho alimento ya que el esfuerzo es muy grande.
Hoy me he reservado y no he comido bocadillo, pues me han recomendado mucho que en el pueblo donde estoy ahora Rabanal del Camino, que pertenece a la comarca de la maragatería leonesa, me coma el típico COCIDO MARAGATO, es el plato típico de aquí y hay gente que hace muchos kilómetros para comerlo... me dice la encargada del albergue que me lo coma a las 7:30 que es muy fuerte y necesito tiempo para hacer la digestión..... así será. Pero no me quedo sin probarlo y en el estomago después del día que me he pegado hay sitio para el cocido.

La catedral de León es impresionante, vaya vidrieras, me impresionó mucho, me di una vuelta por un barrio que le llaman el barrio húmedo y que es donde están todas las tascas, mesones y bares, un ambiente muy guapo... León es una ciudad preciosa....
En lo que respecta al camino es un caos para entrar y un autentico desastre para salir... no hay señales por ningún sitio y cuesta horrores encontrar el camino.
Ayer por la noche en el convento en que estábamos las monjas nos dieron unos libritos con canciones, y nos dieron instrucciones de como teníamos que hacerlo, cuando estábamos suficientemente entrenados nos pasaron a la iglesia y todo el mundo a cantar.... fue muy bonito, a veces cantaban ellas (como los Ángeles) a veces todos ellas igual y nosotros tirando a normal.
El despertar de hoy ha sido a las 6 de la mañana encendiéndose la luz y un tio grande como un oso cantando a pleno pulmón "Asturias patria queridaaaaaaaaaa" la madre que lo parió..
Después las monjas nos han puesto desayuno gratis, tostadas con mermelada, café con leche, mantequilla, galletas... muy bien.
Como ya he comentado antes las he pasado putas para salir de León y por si faltaba poco resulta que dos zonas se pelean para que el camino pase por un sitio o otro... las flechas apuntaban a dos sitios diferentes y a trozos los de una ruta tachaban las flechas de la otra ruta... un desastre....
Cuando he encontrado una ruta ha resultado ser una que va por una llanura solitaria sin pueblos en 20 km. y me he vuelto a encontrar otra vez con el viento pero esta vez de cara que es peor..... A sido muy duro no podías dejar de dar pedales y si te descuidabas te ibas para atrás... había que pedalear hasta en las cuestas abajo.
En medio de la llanura interminable he encontrado a Teo el compañero de Juanma (el de tordera) he caminado un rato con el y cuando el se ha quedado en un bar me he despedido....
Se me ha hecho eterno llegar hasta Astorga que es la ciudad mas grande del camino, y con la separación de las rutas no he encontrado a casi nadie por el camino... no había ni la oportunidad de pararse ha hacer fotos porque no había nada que fotografiar.
Bueno si que hay cosas que fotografiar, pero la verdad es que la etapa se ha hecho tan dura (por culpa del viento... que no quedan ganas de pararse mucho..) seguro que este paisaje sin viento es precioso....
Paso por el largo puente de Hospital de Orbigo, puente que cuenta la historia, que el caballero Suero de Quiñones retó en combate (uno por uno) a 300 caballeros en medio del puente y uno a uno se los fue cargando a todos...
Cuando he llegado a Astorga he visto la catedral que es muy grande y el impresionante palacio de Gaudí. he ido a una tienda de bicicletas pues tengo el pedal un poco estropeado pero no tenían la pieza, en otra tienda tampoco.... ya llevo 2 días así y no es muy importante, me han dicho que en Poncerrada hay otra tienda de bicicletas y miraré si lo puedo arreglar...
Dando vueltas por astorga he encontrado a 2 chicas peregrinas en bicicleta (madrileñas ), me han pedido que les haga una foto y después las he encontrado en la catedral con un ciclista que venia viendo desde principio y que iba acompañado de otro... (es de tarragona), resulta que su compañero ha tenido que dejar el camino por problemas familiares y el está lesionado en una rodilla, el va al ritmo de las chicas porque no puede apretar mucho. Les he acompañado 10 o 15 kilómetros y hemos hablado un buen rato... una de las chicas ha comprado una calabaza a un vendedor muy simpático que estaba a la entrada de un pueblo (Santa Catalina de Somoza).
Después les he dejado y les he dicho el albergue al que iba (que me lo recomendó ayer mi amigo José Antonio de Pamplona) .
también en el tramo final he encontrado a los 2 ciclistas madrileños... uno volvía para atrás como una exhalación... resulta que se ha dejado la cartera en un bar y se la han robado....
El tramo final ha sido un autentico infierno... por si no tenia bastante con el viento, y el frío, ha comenzado a llover a cantaros... he llegado al albergue cansadísimo y hecho una sopa....
El albergue es precioso, y la encargada Isabel, (una madraza y una joya) una persona muy simpática... cuando le he dicho que me había recomendado José Antonio, me ha dado una cama en una habitación con calefacción y me ha tratado de fabula.... le he dicho que guarde sitio para los ciclistas madrileños, el de tarragona y las chicas que vienen detrás.....
Ahora he lavado la ropa y estoy haciendo hora para zamparme el famoso cocido maragato que con el frío que hace y la lluvia y el estomago centrifugando tiene que sentarme de maravilla.....
Isabel me ha dicho que en una iglesia que hay aquí al lado a las 9:30 unos monjes cantan canto gregoriano.... pasaré a verlo, pues este pueblo es muy pequeño y no hay mucho mas que ver...
Mañana me espera una buena montaña el alto de la cruz de hierro... ya os contare...
