Surroundings
Portomarín is nailed on the right bank of the River Minho. The old city consists of two quarters, San Nicolas and San Pedro, which are submerged in the reservoir of Belesar. The present town was built in 1960.
Portomarín was an important stopover in the Middle Ages with a large bridge and hospital, everything is now under the waters of Minho river. The great fortress-church of St. Nicholas, built by monks-knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in the twelfth century, was dismantled stone by stone to be rebuilt in the plaza of the new settlement.
For its monumentality, richness and sumptuousness of its sculptural elements, it is one of the most interesting examples of Romanesque in Lugo.
The Romanesque facade of the church of San Pedro, which was also moved to the edge of town (next to Pazo Berbetoros from the seventeenth century), is beautifully crafted.
The Chapel of Virgen de las Nieves is currently located on top of an arch of the old medieval bridge.
Portomarín has about 2,200 inhabitants and in it you can find grocery stores, bakeries and some mesons.

The town of Castrojeriz will not fail to impress us because of its large number of monuments, its churches, convents and even a castle. In the streets we can feel the essence of time and get lost in alleys where we will feel transported to another time.
Castrojeriz will provide us all the services needed to regain strength, such as shops, bars, pharmacy, ATMs, etc.
